"Holly" - Collie with Fibrosarcoma

Nothing in life is ever guaranteed. Consequently, there is a significant responsibility on the shoulders of veterinary surgeons when trying to predict the outcome of a particular disease or treatment for their patients. This is especially true when dealing with elderly patients whose condition may be compromised simply by age related "wear and tear".

It is vital in these situations to discuss the full implications of what we are recommending especially where that procedure may have a significant adverse effect or level of morbidity.

It is entirely understandable therefore that when I was discussing the prospect of removing a rapidly growing pink tumour (fibrosarcoma) protruding from 15 year old "Holly's" mouth along with 3cm of her bottom jaw and chin her owners, Mr and Mrs Statham, were hesitant to say the least. Could I be certain "Holly" would be fine? Could I be sure that her recovery would be quick? How long would it be before she was eating normally? Would there be any complications?

Whilst I try to be confident about the potential outcome the fact is that there is no guarantee and fundamentally our decision is based on what is probable. Consequently, I will inevitably leave the final decision to the owners.

Fortunately, "Holly" a much loved pet and teriffic companion sailed through the recovery period and I was every bit as delighted as the owners to discover that she had returned to her normal routine within 48 hours. As confident as we may seem we are every bit as relieved as the owners when our patients are quickly restored to good health after major surgery. We always try to predict the right outcome but it is always very reassuring when our patients prove it!
